The change from industrial age to the media or information age has been discussed a lot, it has been written about, films have been made. With all this we have hardly realized how we slid into an electronic everyday life. Everybody individually, at the PC at home, linked with eachother at work, outside in the traffic, on the shifting borders between public and private space. An area of conflict has developed between appropriation of technology and the questioning of it, between the overflow of information and a highly specialized knowledge, which we are constantly trying to keep up with. Often enough an area of conflict between fun and despair.

Visions at a campfire

So let's presume, we find ourselves sometime in the close future, sitting around a campfire on a piece of fallow land in the city. Presence and future as two stable quantities have clashed with the beginning of the new millennium, erasing each other. The surrounding world has lost the aura of the futurous and before us lies the eternal, empty wideness of the presence and an unwritten future. And from it stories are emerging: like many little mosaic pieces. Each of it has another colour, it's origin at a different place, but together they form an iridescent web of our dreams, wishes and experiences.

Call Center

Phone shops in Germany are a new phenomenon at the end of the 90's. People of different nationalities calling their homes from here because the fares are cheap. A social space develops, in which stories accumulate, cross each other and create an ethnographic pattern.

RELATIONSHIPS

The intensive relation to the personal computer is a synonym of our age, in which people project their unfulfilled desires and wishes onto communication with the machine. We ask questions about the joy and the doubts in such a relationship and search for possibilities and visions of a former fusion, like it is already reality in first signs.

ZERONE

We witness the self-installation of a computer system, caused by a mistake. Neither it is a virus, nor a parasite - in fact it is food. It reproduces itself in a more and more complex way. The video is a trip through the inside of ZerOne, a graphical experiment from artificially created interferences, collapsing images and system errors.

SETI@HOME

It is not very unlikely that somewhere out there in space intelligent life exists. With seti@home, a project initiated by the University of Berkeley, now everybody is able to search through packages of data collected from space for the "certain something" within the general noise. .

TIME CAPSULE

The outgoing 20th century is characterized by the intensive use of media. Sounds and images, which we make visible, audible and accessible with constantly new and better machines. If we had the order to send a message into the future, which contained the special, the characteristic, a kind of essence of this media-dominated life - what would our message contain?
