Jetzt Zeichen setzen (Make a Mark Now)

  • Installation/ Intervention in public space
  • Stiftung Starke, Berlin
  • 1992

‘Jetzt Zeichen setzen’ uses an object at a specific time, which gives it a special effect. Every year at Christmas, colourful Christmas lights flicker in thousands of window frames all over Berlin. These fairy lights are always there. The installation of Botschaft hangs a week earlier and instrumentalises them for a fictitious ‘movement’. Weeks later, the fairy lights against xenophobia are lit up all over Germany and the then Federal President Richard von Weizsäcker also wants to make a mark.

'The final occupation of the window niche as a bastion between the locked-out viewer and the locked-in art has been found by the Botschaft e.V.. A poster with the inscription 'All Berliners are united. Make a Mark Now', outside you can see decorative Christmas lights'. (Harald Fricke, TAZ from 5 december1992)

This collective artistic work by the Botschaft e.V. group was created as part of the ‘richtig '92’ series of events at the invitation of the Starke Foundation Berlin.
